GRAY MATTERS

For decades, EEG’s have measured the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes attached to the scalp. These measurements show whether we’re awake or asleep, daydreaming or mentally alert. Neurofeedback harnesses this information by turning it into a training tool by not just observing the brain’s activity - but by rewarding it for being in a desired state. In the case of ADHD (whether inattentive, hyperactive or combined types), the frontal lobes of the brain are less engaged, with a measurable excess of slow brain waves (delta and theta waves), and not enough faster brain waves (beta waves). Neurofeedback simply rewards an individual for reducing the ratio of their slower brain waves compared to their faster brain waves.
Neurofeedback training frequently uses a video game interface, in which the gaming experience is linked in real time to measurements of brain activity, measured by EEG electrodes on the scalp. For example with neurofeedback for ADHD, the more an individual concentrates (increasing alert “beta” activity and reducing slower, “theta” activity), the faster they can drive their car in a racing game. Video systems work on a similar principle, with the screen clearing or increasing in size to reward pre-determined brain-states.
Gray Matters works with both children and adults, and is a clinical provider for two different neurofeedback systems:
Smartbrain Technologies: Gray Matters is Connecticut’s only clinical provider for this technology, based on patented NASA technology developed to give pilots feedback on their attention in the cockpit. Gray Matters has further refined these systems and developed its own unique method:
Cygnet, by EEG Info: State of the in-office neurofeedback, used for:
All neurofeedback progress is monitored using QEEG data, with brain maps made before during and after neurofeedback,
matching symptom improvement with empirical results.
Gray Matters has an established record of success:
