Neurofeedback
Many children, for a variety of reasons, do not develop the skills of sustained focus and concentration that we require of them in the modern world.
Whilst drug therapies provide temporary symptomatic relief, they merely mask the underlying issues, which remain unaddressed. Neurofeedback works with the underlying problem through direct training - allowing children to reach their potential, and improving their lives on many levels, both at school and at home. The benefits of neurofeedback are also permanent and free of side-effects.
Gray Matters’ neurofeedback training links EEG sensors measuring brain activity with specially adapted Playstation 2 game consoles, using technology licensed directly from NASA. Training protocols are individually tailored to each child, so that their interface with the game will be programmed to encourage improvements specific to their needs.
For example, with children who find it difficult to settle and focus, we inversely link
anxious and distractible brain frequencies with speed in car racing games. Children
rapidly learn the ability to calmly focus their minds in order to increase the speed of their car.
The success of any therapy, especially with children, is hugely influenced by how engaging and enjoyable it is. Our neurofeedback uses off the shelf games developed for Sony Playstations – we are therefore confident that sessions with our technology will be fun, and therefore more effective as training.
Not only is our equipment state-of the-art - our treatment model is also unique. Neurofeedback typically involves 40 sessions; however our technology facilitates the bulk of these to be with adult supervision in your home. We program each child’s neurofeedback equipment with their own, tailored training protocol, and expect only 1 in 7 sessions to be in the clinic. Data from at home sessions can be downloaded and emailed to us, and we are always available for support. However by minimising clinic sessions we can achieve two goals: A lower treatment cost, and the time to treat more children.
Whilst we use the latest technology for our training, we take a compassionate and sensitive view of the broader picture. Experience has shown us that frequently there is more than one issue that needs to be addressed - our association with Living in Harmony LLC, allows us to help with broader psychological issues, thus making the training itself more effective.
