D.B., the clinic's viewpoint:
D.B. started with Gray matters in late January 2009. Diagnosed as ADHD, D.B had been on Adderall for four years, and came to us on 15mg. He struggled with structure, organization, and keeping still, however with a very high IQ, he was doing well at school. With neurofeedback he was able to gradually reduce his medication, and in mid April was medication-free. He is maintaining his performance at school , but seems more vibrant, makes better eye contact, and seems more upbeat. D.B. has huge potential, and it's been a pleasure working with him.
D.B's Mom:
I knew my son was bright, but he was struggling to produce his school work. I eventually put him on medication, which was helpful, but hated the idea of having his brain dependent on it indefinately - so we tried neurofeedback at Gray Matters.
Anthony Silver was professional and engaging. He spent lots of time explaining the science behind neurofeedback, and allowing my son to use the equipment. Now, after a few months, my son is off medications. It's very exciting to hear about the improvements in school from his teachers as well.
Neurofeedback requires a daily commitment, but the results are amazing!
Thanks Anthony, thanks Gray Matters!
Richie (aged 7), the clinic's viewpoint:
Richie’s mother was very concerned about her 7 year old son. Diagnosed with ADHD, he was taking 15mg of Focalin in the morning and 10mg of Ritalin when he came home from school. Although it made Richie more functional at school and in the home, the medication had suppressed his appetite (he’d lost 25 pounds in six months) and he was going to sleep long after his parents.
When Richie came to the clinic he was practically bouncing off the walls. He was unrecognizable from the picture of the solid boy his mother showed me, taken 6 months before. His EEG showed he had a ratio of fast to slow brain waves (beta to alpha/theta) of 2.06. His brain was overwhelmed with slow wave activity and he was unable to focus. .
One and a half weeks into neurofeedback training (eight in-clinic sessions, increasing his beta (fast waves, and reducing the alpha/theta (slow waves), Richie came into the clinic and calmly sat down. His mother then told me that she had not given him his Ritalin on this, or the previous day - “That he just didn’t seem to need it.” His beta to alpha/theta ratio was 2.93. Richie continues to improve, and we are co-ordinating with his family doctor to start reducing his morning medication.
Richie is now completing his homework, eating a full dinner, and going to sleep at a more normal time. He is still doing well without his afternoon Ritalin, and is almost visibly regaining his weight.
Jenny R (Richie's mother):
"About 3 weeks ago, while sitting in a doctor's office, I happened on a copy of Westport Magazine. On the cover was an article about ADHD. While thumbing through the pages, I thought "What else could possibly save my son from all the horrible effects of his medication?" I was really at my wit's end, questioning myself as a parent as to whether givining meds was right for my son. Seeing my beautiful 7 year old boy, so gaunt and drawn all the time, was unbearable. But, when I didn't give him his meds, he was out of control to the point where he couldn't even watch his favourite TV show, because he couldn't sit still for 30 minutes. His jumping about and thrashing his body from sofa to sofa was painful to watch. Now he's off his Ritalin and is still calm until he goes to bed.
"Learning about Anthony Silver and Gray Matters was an answer to a prayer I've been praying for a long time. In the few sessions (about 9) that Richie had, I've seen dramatic changes. I feel like I'm getting my little boy back.
"My son, who normally cried at the sight of a book, sat down with me and painlessly, and beautifully read 3 books aloud. It's like a "miracle in the works" - when I dressed my son this morning, in his uniform button-down shirt, I noticed the collar was tight - I put him on the scale and he has gained 2lbs from all those wonderful dinners that I'm not scraping into the garbage anymore. I bent down and kissed his toes I was so ecstatic. I am so pleased with the effects that Anthony and Gray Matters has had on Richie. I have faith that with my eyes open, I will witness something new and spectacular from Richie every day to come."
